Metabolomics and IEMs: Past Insights and Future Directions
Speaker: Dr. David Wishart

This presentation will provide some background on metabolomics and describe its evolution from a niche field of omics science to a mainstream field that is now used in the diagnosis of inherited metabolic diseases. I will briefly compare where the field was 20 years ago (when I last gave a keynote address to the Garrod Society) to where it is now. I will describe the technologies that are currently used in metabolomics and the emerging trends in the field. In particular, I will describe new areas of metabolomics research, new metabolomics resources and new applications of AI that are likely to benefit the study, discovery, characterization and monitoring of inherited metabolic disorders.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of metabolomics, what it can measure and how it is and will be used for diagnosing and monitoring IEMs.

Target Audience: Clinical Geneticists, Laboratory Geneticists, Molecular Pathologists, Medical Lab Technologists

CanMEDS Roles: Scholar

David Wishart is a Distinguished University Professor and Tier I Canada Research Chair at the University of Alberta. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1991. Widely considered the “father of metabolomics”, Wishart conceived and led the groundbreaking Human Metabolome Project. Since 2005, this project has identified over 240,000 human metabolites and has fundamentally transformed our understanding of human chemistry. As founder of the Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC) and creator of essential databases and software tools including the Human Metabolome Database, DrugBank and MetaboAnalyst, Wishart has worked hard for the past 20 years to make metabolomics accessible to scientists worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and recipient of the prestigious NSERC Herzberg Gold Medal and Brockhouse Award. Dr. Wishart is currently using metabolomics and artificial intelligence to drive medicine towards proactive healthcare, disease prevention and precision health.
